Conceived as a collection of contemporary farm buildings gathered under one expansive gable roof, the house’s form is immediately provocative of the traditional farming structures that once inhabited the local area.
The client’s brief was to create a space reminiscent of their beloved downtown Chicago industrial loft in a rural farm setting. Furthermore, the design ought to incorporate their unique collection of antiques and architectural salvage.
Rather than build a fortress against the elements, we designed Zinfandel house with an ethos of opening up to the environment, and participating in a deep and respectful dialogue with the land.
Conceptually the Silvernails house design evolved from the architect’s research into three historic archetypes : the New World Dutch, 3 Bay English and New England Barns, all built throughout the area during the 18th and 19th Centuries.
Designed to suit the rural setting, the Kalgup Retreat embraces the Western Australian landscape with its extensive side verandah and sweeping views, feature bush poles, exposed rafters and feature weatherboard cladding.
The Aldeia House was conceived as an attempt to converge into a single house the sometimes antagonistic demands of two people. The couple brought to the design process their concerns and expectations regarding their considerable change, not only a residential one, but also a lifestyle shift.
