AV is a renovation of a row house in Sint-Niklaas. Starting from a typical Belgian situation of historically grown extensions, the first step was to sanitise the existing building and bring it back to its former self.
Koen Pauwels and Wim Van der Vurst founded their office, i.s.m.architecten, in 2010 and previously worked together on projects for RAUW Architects, Monarch / Smar, FLC Extended and Bataille ibens & Design. They share a view that architecture should not be neutral, but must take a clear position. She should move, surprise and be beautiful. In recent years they designed known catering businesses in Antwerp but also a range of offices as well as residential constructions and renovations. i.s.m.architecten strongly believes in the indivisibility of architecture and its interior space. Based on experience gained in their many years of collaboration with renowned interior office Bataille & ibens, it’s a belief they continue to pursue in their own practice.
This freestanding concrete house to the north of Brussels, is situated on a plot which due to its irregular shape remained unsold for a long period of time.
