About Pencil Office
Pencil Office’s design direction is by Erik L’Heureux FAIA. Erik migrated to the equator from New York in 2003. Despite his cool climate background, he has built a thriving creative practice, with a specialty in designing for the dense equatorial city.
Erik L’Heureux FAIA, LEED AP BD+C is a celebrated American architect and educator who has a special interest in designing for the dense equatorial city. He has received several design awards for his work including a 2017 and 2016 Society of Registered Architects Design Award, 2013 WAF Category Design Award, 2013 FuturArc Green Leadership Architecture Award, 2012 AIA New York City Design Award, 2011 President’s Design Award from Singapore, and two AIA New York State Design Awards in 2009 and 2007 respectively. Erik was awarded with the Wheelwright Prize from Harvard University in 2015 for expanding his research on architecture and the equatorial city across the globe. In 2020, Erik was elevated to the College of Fellows, American Institute of Architects.
A former wooden boat builder, he practiced architecture in New York City while teaching at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union. Erik graduated from Princeton University with a Master of Architecture degree and as a recipient of the Suzanne K. Underwood Design Award. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture as a James W. Fitzgibbon Scholar at Washington University in St Louis. He was later honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2006. Erik is a registered architect in the USA, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, NCARB certified, and a LEED accredited professional.
In 2015, he co-curated the exhibition, “1000 Singapores: Eight Points of the Compact City”, at the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris, France. “1000 Singapores: A Model of the Compact City” held at the Architecture Venice Biennale in 2010 was also co-curated by Erik. His work is in permanent collection of the Asian Culture Complex in South Korea. He was a contributing editor to Architectural Review Asia Pacific and has published “Deep Veils”, a book on his design thinking with ORO Editions.
In addition to his creative practice, Erik is a Vice Dean, Dean’s Chair Associate Professor and Master of Architecture Program Director at the National University of Singapore. In 2017, Erik was the Ruth and Norman Moore Visiting Professor at Washington University in St. Louis.
