Maxwell MacKenzie earned a BA degree from Bennington College, in Vermont in 1975, with a dual major in architecture & photography. He began his photographic career in an old coffee warehouse on the Thames, in Wapping, East London, shooting ads and editorial work in England, and Europe. In 1981 MacKenzie moved his base to Washington, DC and began specializing exclusively in the photography of architecture & interiors. He did post-graduate work at the Corcoran Gallery School of Art, and studied with two of the best practitioners in his field: Peter Aaron of ESTO Photographics at the Maine Photographic Workshop, and Nick Merrick of Hedrich Blessing at the Santa Fe Photo Workshop.
