This is a family home in the Wellington suburb of Whitby, sitting amongst manuka forest and overlooking a relatively undeveloped bush filled valley. The owners were inspired by this setting and wanted a home with spaces that nestled amongst the trees.
The Point house is situated behind an existing bungalow and on what was previously an empty backyard. The 665m2 site’s point of difference in its suburban context is a rear boundary that adjoins a community reserve
The site is a large dunescape, carpeted with Muehlenbeckia, which undulates and rolls SW to NE down to a long East Coast beach. Planning restrictions stipulated a 200m setback from the high-water mark.
This NZIA award-winning house was designed by Patchwork Architecture for the owner of Dorset Construction, Adam Pierson. Located on the corner of a busy suburban street overlooking Kilbirnie, creating the home for the builder and his family was a challenging task.
Set on the tranquil Rangitahi Peninsula, the Sisters Sanctuary Retreat instils a sense of calm, beauty, and solidarity throughout. The home is a considered response to the social dynamic of the developing street to the west and the expansive inlet views to the east.
The original bungalow, though dated and backwards in its planning, had a great deal of potential to create a substantial family home.
The 1.8-hectare site is a naturally formed terrace snuggled into the gentle north-sloping base of Queenstown Hill, overlooking the untamed Shotover River which disappears around the bend.
The Alpine Terrace house is a cluster of simple blackened buildings set around a courtyard. The cluster is sited on a sloping terrace surrounded by mountain ranges overlooking the Wakatipu Basin in New Zealand’s Southern Alps.
The kitchen is the hub of the River Retreat with the deck slicing through the plan. The living space steps down into a light filled volume reaching out to the river.
This 135 square metre house is located in an inner city Wellington suburb. Tight sunlight planes from all four neighbours, luscious existing native vegetation and a steep slope on an unusually shaped site determined the folded boomerang shape.
Forest House was completed this year by NZ-based Fearon Hay Architects. Set at the foot of the Waitakere Ranges, the Forest House is a collection of timber clad, gabled structures. They slip past each other, opening spaces for courtyards, cooking and fire. Exterior shells of native timber boards and shingle roof are founded over cast in situ
