By origin, Space & Matter is an architecture office, but we do much more than just designing buildings… Aside from designing at all scales, we create urban development strategies; make online platforms; and even initiate new business ventures. Everything we do is always focused on improving the built environment and promoting a cohesive society.
Space & Matter is a studio for spatial design and concept development. With an integrated design approach we design and develop buildings and neighbourhoods that foster close knit communities and have a positive impact on our planet.
We’re working towards a more cooperative form of project development, placing the community and common good at the heart of the process.
Most of our project integrate circular economy principles, where flows of materials, people, money, energy and ecology interact in harmony.
We’re at the forefront of developing and realising sustainable floating neighbourhoods, providing resilience in face of climate change.

Wij_land is a self-build collective that brings together individuals committed to a more sustainable and socially connected way of living. Initiated by Mireille Capiau and Daniël Bakker, the project was developed with the guidance of Space&Matter and Common City, shaping a residential community that prioritizes sharing, diversity, and environmental responsibility.
SWEETS hotel is a new hotel that is dotted across Amsterdam in 28 different bridge houses, built along and on Amsterdam’s canals between 1673 and 2009, each one designed in the architectural style of its building period.
