This new ground-up urban infill residence is strategically located at the intersection of two major bike routes in the Mount Baker neighborhood of Seattle. The lot is narrow, but has lake and mountain views to the east.
The Wood Block Residence is a reimagination and reconstruction of one of the iconic Seattle architect Fred Bassetti’s earliest designs. Fronting a busy street, the owners wanted to create a protective shelter for family life.
Nestled into a Mercer Island hillside, this intimate two-story residence emphasizes craft, materiality and the connection to the outdoors. A clear demarcation of public and private spaces is reflected both in the design and choice of materials
The T-shaped form of Rimrock responds to the unique typography of the bluff upon which it is situated. Sited at the edge of a cliff, the house straddles two sides of wash atop a stable outcropping of tough, slow-cooled volcanic basalt.
