Our Clients approached our studio expressing a love for the ‘Bach’ (pronounced ‘batch’), a super-small footprint holiday home type, common in New Zealand.
Sorrento Beach house is comprised of a raw concrete internal shell, wrapped in a timber exterior. The thermal mass provided by the concrete is insulated externally providing stable internal temperatures, and the timber exterior shades the concrete, further eliminating heat loads in summer.
The intention was two-fold, firstly to lengthen and consolidate the experience of the original Hawthorn house by extending the formal corridor to a third bay, and restoring the original ceiling height and heritage detail throughout.
The Commons, by Breathe Architecture, is situated in East Brunswick, six kilometers from Melbourne’s CBD. Clad in a chevron-patterned façade, the building is a raw and captivating piece of architecture.
