House in Schaerbeek underwent a comprehensive transformation by hé! architectuur to meet the owners’ desire for a raw, ‘unfinished’ aesthetic and better use of space. Located in Brussels’s Anderlecht borough, this narrow townhouse originally contained multiple nurseries and a tiny garden, yet boasted a rare rear vista opening onto the 19th-century Old Veterinary School.
In the 1990s, Marc and Ann purchased a turnkey farmhouse-style home in the Pajottenland, where their two daughters would grow up. Both Marc and Ann work in the social sector, and they hoped to grow old in this house. However, over time, the home’s original connection to the surrounding hilly landscape faded.
Kasteel Home by hé! architectuur transforms a traditional Antwerp residence into a dynamic, light-filled family dwelling. When Frederik, Els, and their two daughters decided to remove a non-original rear annex, hé! architectuur designed a compact, tall, and open extension that brings generous natural light into the home and forges a strong connection between interior and garden.
Finally, the interior structure uses composite columns and beams with bolted connections. As a result, we can disassemble and reuse them later. We minimized material types and repeated low-tech details to keep construction clear and adaptable. Therefore, anyone can understand and modify the building over time.
