The owner’s period, one-bedroom garden flat was tired, outdated and suffered from a compromised layout. The uninsulated bathroom, located to the rear of the house, could only be accessed by walking through the kitchen.
The modern glass extension was designed to draw more light deeper into the living areas, but also to visually extend the living space of the house out into the landscape.
The Mill House is a Grade II listed property located in Shalford village Conservation Area. The house is set within a generous 6-acre plot with stunning views adjacent to ‘Shalford Mill’, an 18th Century watermill with Grade II * listing.
The project involved an existing double fronted Victorian house with a council Heritage Overlay. The previous 1980s extension to the rear was removed with a clean break between the original area of house and the extension.
Our clients found the original Edwardian layout of their new home with it’s dark interiors and cellular, disconnected spaces hard to reconcile with their desire for light filled, free flowing spaces with a bold design and connection to the garden.
Set behind an existing weatherboard cottage, a series of interlocking masonry volumes are placed to gain the maximum amount of light and air. A new lightwell was created immediately behind the cottage, followed by three new brick volumes which slide down the southern side of the site.
The Sun Rain Room is a two-storey extension and restoration of a Grade-II Listed Georgian townhouse. The extension reframes the rear of the building by amplifying the characteristics found within its fabric. Designed and constructed by Tonkin Liu in collaboration with local craftspeople
Working from home, but lacking a dedicated office space for their up-coming startup company, the owners decided to extend their double Victorian house into their backyard, which had been left unused until now.
