KOKO Architects

KOKO Architects is an Estonian studio officially established in the early 2000s by the team behind Estonia’s acclaimed EXPO 2000 pavilion in Hanover—a conceptual wooden installation that celebrated the nation’s renewed independence. Driven by a desire to engage architecture’s physical and social dimensions, KOKO honed its voice through competitions and small‑scale commissions, rapidly gaining a reputation for work that is deeply rooted in context, respectful of history, yet unafraid to challenge conventions.

Early projects, such as the controversial red‑orange retrofit of a Soviet‑era kolkhoz into apartments, signaled the firm’s willingness to provoke dialogue and bring new life to overlooked neighborhoods. This approach culminated in the award‑shortlisted Fahle building transformation—turning a decaying cellulose factory into a vibrant mixed‑use landmark. Through sensitive adaptive reuse, bold material and color choices, and careful attention to cultural resonance, KOKO Architects continues to define Estonia’s contemporary built environment.
