The owners of this dwelling wanted to build an ABATON house, but it was crucial for them from the very beginning to achieve the feeling of a “home”. This is why we thought it would be better to refurbish an existing house with a consolidated plan and garden that would later accommodate the contemporary architecture that we proposed.
The homeowners of Bilateral House are a married couple with three girls. They purchased a lot with a 116-year-old Period Revival home in a mature picturesque neighbourhood in the city. As avid collectors of contemporary art and vintage furniture, they wanted to build a modern gallery-inspired home with high ceilings to display their collections artfully.
The site presented us with a few challenges. First of all, it was set between 2 traditional, low lying thatched cottages identified as being of architectural significance. Secondly, the views out to sea were only achievable at first floor level, and thirdly, the front, less-private side to the plot faced south meaning there would be a conflict between the road and the proposed garden that would front onto it.

Sodae house is a family home designed by Dutch studio VMX Architects. The house is located in Amstelveen, The Netherlands. Situated in a precious piece of unspoiled polder, the Sodae house responds to the many qualities of the landscape. The seclusion and privacy of the remote location are reinforced by an enclosed garden, surrounding the sleeping quarters on the ground floor.
Our clients selected a rural south facing wooded site with a clearing on top of a knoll for their retirement home. We chose to abandon an existing driveway in favor of keeping the knoll as open space for a court yard garden for the residence.
