Tumu Studio
Tumu Studio, founded in 2017 by Huili Feng and Ross Barney, brings together two decades of global design experience in a boutique setting. Having met in 2003 at Goettsch Partners and honed their skills on international high‑rise and civic projects—most notably the Chicago Riverwalk—Huili and Ross launched Tumu to deliver personalized architecture and design across commercial buildings, urban spaces, interiors, and custom furniture. Their combined expertise in materials, systems, and innovative design processes ensures each project benefits from both technical rigor and creative insight.
Rooted in the Chinese characters “tu” (earth) and “mu” (wood), Tumu embodies a commitment to authenticity, simplicity, and a deep respect for nature’s elemental building materials. Drawing on diverse cultural backgrounds and lived experiences from around the world, the studio approaches every commission with resourcefulness, refined taste, and a clear focus on how spaces can be thoughtfully crafted to enrich daily life.
