Richmond Terrace by Robert Nichol & Sons
This Richmond Terrace project involved the demolition and rebuilding of an unusual and substantial 1980’s mock Italianate terrace.
Robert Nichol & sons is a small multidisciplinary firm formed from a background of Fine Art, Architecture and Design. Working across a broad range of projects we aim to explore and promote creative, respectful design solutions.
Robert Nichol and sons are Architects in Fitzroy. We are Brett Robertson and David Nicholson (plus Daisy the Jack Russell). We’ve been around for more than 20 years.
We work out of a small shared office in Fitzroy which suits our business well and ties us to the community. It allows us to work small so we can get to know our clients even better.
Usually we work across a few homes a year, and one or two non-residential projects where the client shares our principles.
Our approach to design is to focus on the things that matter, the things that make us happy; architecture, sustainability, wellness, yoga, all things food, keeping fit, our dogs, visiting amazing places and contributing to the community.
We like to explore innovations in form, material and styles, and seek to promote design that is respectful of the site, enhances client experience and is beneficial to the wider community.
We are not like a lot of other architects and we don’t try to be. We love what we do and believe the process, the journey and the final result should bring pleasure. Designing and building a home should not be a stressful experience. If you feel the same way, let’s have a chat. We’re very easy to talk to, especially over a cup of tea.

Crisp House is among the oldest remaining timber dwellings in Collingwood, and this is the reason for the high rating. Heritage houses are a double edged sword for an architect, especially if it’s an own home.
The Breakneck Gorge Oikos project successfully met all the clients’ expectations and more – they look out to a sculptured mix of corten form and long masonry blade, which reads neatly as a connection to the landscape rather than an inhabited space.
