This loft in a former jute mill was in a state of disrepair when we got our hands on it. Our approach was to combine many of the original elements with modern touches to create a space with a clean, contemporary, yet raw feeling.
The space is infused with natural sunlight which inspired our use of bright materials throughout, from white oak millwork in the kitchen to concrete in the bathroom – for everything from the walls to a sink of our own design.
The Eastern tradition and background of the Client finds influence in the material finish qualities of the house. Aspiring to descriptions of shade, shadow and dimness by Junichiro-Tanizaki in his essay, In Praise of Shadows, alcoves of darkness transition to sunlit spaces that connect to the landscape.
Recently completed by Feldman Architecture, Healdsburg House was designed as an open air pavilion to embrace the sweeping views. Metal and glass panels lift to provide seamless connections to the outdoor spaces on both sides of the house.
This is a brand new, super modern house tied into the site’s original Victorian façade. The house sits on a dramatic uphill lot between two neighboring buildings, which we approached with a thoughtfully devised strategy to ensure successful site management, staging and access.
The Oak Pass main house sits on the top of a 3.5 acre ridge site with panoramic canyon views. There are over 130 protected Oak trees on the property. The house was sited to take advantage of the views without the house becoming a central visual focus.
Winner of the 2015 ASLA-NCC Top Residential Design Award, the Hilgard Garden / Outdoor Living Space was designed by Mary Barensfeld Architecture in Berkeley, California.
This complete rebuild of a mid-century, the design flows from an analysis of the varied site conditions already present and reinforces key relationships to the site while establishing new ones.
