This Lake Michigan beach house courts efficiency from multiple angles – quite literally. A splayed floor plan opens views to the water and horizon, and divides public and private spaces into insulated zones to condition only those areas that are in use.
Accompanying a mutual friend nearly as long ago, the architect visited the site as a guest and years later could easily recall the inspiration inherent in the site. Ultimately dream and inspiration met to create this weekend retreat.
Grounded by its singular direction and enhanced by innovative details, the Shadow Box may eventually cast its “shadow” onto our future work, extending the knowledge we’ve gained and the lessons learned.
Although a freestanding home, this 2500 s.f. 5-level split is similar in plan to an attached townhouse with most of its windows on the front and back and virtually none in the longer sidewalls.
