Nestled in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the House of Horns overlooks San Francisco Bay. Here, an inherited ruin—a half-built “Spanish Style” foundation—became the canvas for a new vision. Instead of erasing what existed, the architects wove it into a fresh composition of rhythms, forms, and materials that respond to the land and the sky.
When the owner acquired this three-storey Toronto house, its 1960s studio vibe felt outdated and cramped. Consequently, WILLIAMSCRAIG Design gutted the interior to craft a warm, adaptable home for a recently widowed parent and two pre-teen children. The result highlights family togetherness and private retreats, while forging a strong connection to the garden.
Finally, the interior structure uses composite columns and beams with bolted connections. As a result, we can disassemble and reuse them later. We minimized material types and repeated low-tech details to keep construction clear and adaptable. Therefore, anyone can understand and modify the building over time.
Ka’anche House sits in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, within a residential development centered around a shared urban garden. This green space guides both the home’s placement and its design. As a result, the house maintains a constant visual and functional connection to the landscape.
