Ottiqa House, Kuala Lumpur by Fabian Tan Architect
A home set in the hillside of an affluent area owned by a young couple, about to start a family. The brief was to accommodate a place that will provide a calm simple lifestyle.
Fabian Tan graduated with Honours from the University of South Australia in 1997 where he received his Bachelor of Architecture. Since then, he has worked at established architectural offices in Kuala Lumpur & Melbourne, handling a wide range of developments that include residential, institutional, commercial and interior projects for 11 year.
During those years, he was also passionately pursuing other forms of expression that resulted in the creation of art pieces, furniture and installations. This experience served as a catalyst to the formation of his own practice, Fabian Tan Architect in 2012.
The firm has completed several notable houses which have garnered international attention and favourable publication throughout Asia & Europe.
His approach to architecture has been one that involves evolution and flexibility. Ideas that are formed in the conception of a project never imposes anything on the site. Throughout, conventions are constantly reassessed, resulting in individual variations of concepts meant for a specific context. He believes that the essence and consistency of a space is a whole that reflects its constituent parts such as light, material, volume, and relationships. In this hectic and overly complicated times we exist in, restraint and reduction serve as his guiding philosophy to create buildings of subtle beauty.

Bewboc House is a suburban terrace house in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia owned by a young family who requested for minimal intervention. The approach was to reimagine a form befitting a corner house and to re-purpose the living spaces on ground level.
The house is a typical single storey terrace house on a plot of 23′ x 75′ land. The original house layout is typically closed and the brief was to create an open plan on one side and private rooms on the other side of the dividing center wall.
Nestled in a high-end enclave at Kuala Lumpur, this bungalow house is an ancestral residence that is home to a young family. Their brief was to modernize the home while preserving its existing layout and form to conserve their familiarity and comfort.
This semi-detached modern house was rebuilt for a young family on a 60’ x 90’ piece of land. Laid out over two different levels, the lower section of the plot houses the car porch with a ramp and staircase, connecting it to the home which sits on the higher land area.
