In the north of Amsterdam, a traditional ‘’Dijkhuis’’ (dyke house) has been transformed into a family home by Studio Modijefsky. This kind of building, as you might have guessed, is built next to a dyke.
A total of 4935 sqft of living space (per the builder) is masterfully designed and features the Main Residence at 4260 sqft with 5 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, a Guest House/ADU at 520 sqft with a kitchen and bathroom, and a Pool Cabana at 155 sqft with an indoor toilet and sink and outdoor shower.
Shoehorned into the back of a beautiful Edwardian terraced property, the existing studio was entirely unloved and underwhelming. Every inch of wall was stained orange by cigarette smoke, the single glazing was falling out of its rotten frames and the whole place was uninsulated.
This two-unit residential building proposes an alternative to conventional building strategies found throughout San Francisco. At the front elevation, a modern bay window is employed, contributing to the scale and rhythm of the more traditional bay windows found on this street.
Located in Sintra, an area that is known for its romanticist palaces and gardens as well as its relative proximity to the sea, this project stands within the former Puppeteers’ Quarter.
