Coming from a compact Lower East Side walk up apt with a third child on the way, OAD Interiors wanted to be sure this home felt spacious and would be a house the family could grow in.
The Lantern Residence sits on the perfect balance between being nestled into the hillside and rising above it. Designed as two levels for a local entrepreneur and family, the very linear “L” shape is able to spread the main spaces of the house out more evenly across the site in the direction of the topography.
This multi-award winning house has been inspired by the Scottish blackhouse, but abstracted in to modern architecture.
This project hopes to use the concept of “Floating Plateau” to create the multiple scenarios and functionality under a suspended space, and to balance the life of the family and maid in a limited space.
With a coastal Mediterranean-leaning design interest in materials and colors, this 2-story home was designed to accommodate the needs of a family of 4 while combining a simple material palette with an abundance of natural light in all rooms.
