We initially saw Balmain Rock House as a restoration and extension project, however through a collaborative process of discovery with the client, the existing cottage was not only restored, but its resonating bones became the inspiration for its addition.
Conceptually, the project is an insertion of two augmented lodges atop the existing house – one contains the parents’ bedroom & facilities, whilst the other is the children’s bedrooms.
A carefully designed courtyard was fundamental to the Glebe Red House, combining a variety of landscape elements that deliberate a place of gathering.
Benn & Penna Architects have extended and renovated Surry Hills House, a Victorian-era terrace house located in Sydney, Australia. By the insertion of a delicate steel stairwell, new spaces unfold from light and air. Benn & Penna have created a floorplan that provides an open plan kitchen and dining area that flows out to the courtyard and BBQ beyond bi-folding glass doors.
