The intention was two-fold, firstly to lengthen and consolidate the experience of the original Hawthorn house by extending the formal corridor to a third bay, and restoring the original ceiling height and heritage detail throughout.
The Commons, by Breathe Architecture, is situated in East Brunswick, six kilometers from Melbourne’s CBD. Clad in a chevron-patterned façade, the building is a raw and captivating piece of architecture.
The proposed modern addition is designed through a contextual approach that aims to make the most of natural light and create optimal interior comfort through carefully considered organization, while remaining recessive from the street.
Halo House was designed by Breathe Architecture with landscape design by Eckersley Garden Architecture. Breathe explain the concept of a “halo effect” of enhanced activity in & around the house, similar to that of an iceberg in the ocean.

Mt Martha House is a residential project completed by Bird de la Coeur Architects, a boutique firm founded in 1992 by Neil de la Coeur and Vanessa Bird in Melbourne’s Southbank. This site falls away steeply by 17m from front to back. The house is mostly viewed from above, from properties higher up the hill and this was a major design consideration.
A Postcard Home (postmarked 2013) Well it’s a been a year since we have been in our beautiful new house. I still get a buzz every morning when I wake up and look at the view from our bedroom. The other night we stayed on the deck most of the night starting with drinks before dinner, a bbq with friends and finishing off with our evening soak in the spa pool.
