BlueStar Design Build engaged Teass/Warren Architects to renovate the property, which was set on a steep & narrow lot. Because of this, the house needed to go vertical which allowed the opportunity to create a tall, tower-like element in the middle of the home that connects the two gabled elements.
This renovation and rear addition to the architect’s own 1950 mid-century modern house, designed by Charles Goodman, included 2 phases. The existing Goodman structure was renovated 5 years ago, with new kitchen, bathroom, finishes, windows, mechanical, and electrical.
This home is part of a co-housing community in rural Virginia and is located on a steeply sloping site with distant mountain views. This modern farmhouse retreat is a modern interpretation of the traditional white clapboard farmhouse and red barn that populate the neighboring countryside.
Lyon Park, in Arlington, Virginia is an “urban village” near Washington, DC. Most of the houses in this established neighborhood were constructed in the 1920’s and 1930’s. The houses vary in style, ranging from small single-story bungalows to larger wood and brick colonial revivalist houses.
Located in Glen Echo, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC, this new house is sited on a sloping, wooded lot with distant views of the Potomac River. The Mohican Hills House is positioned to preserve a majority of mature trees and is oriented toward distant views of the Potomac River and a south facing slope.
Hawks Nest is a home and studio for a sculptor from Paris who was drawn to the site, an abandoned limestone quarry, with its sweeping views of the Potomac River. Located in Falling Waters, West Virginia, this amazing retreat was conceived and designed by Greg Wiedemann, AIA, and Barbara Sweeney, AIA, of Wiedemann Architects.
In this interior alteration project, the architect and new owner pushed the amenities to the forefront by reducing the program (4 bedrooms to 3), moving the kitchen (so as not to block the view of the river from the entry)
A 1960 vintage 5-story office building, situated adjacent to the Wheaton Metrorail station, is adapted and extended to create a new 12-story, 194-unit apartment building. The project was completed recently by Bonstra Haresign Architects. Its mix of studios, one- and two-bedroom units, along with two levels of below-grade parking and ample rooftop amenities
The design of this house in St. Michaels, Maryland was greatly influenced by environmental regulations, zoning requirements and restrictive building codes specific to this site. The existing Dutch Colonial Style house, built in 1989, was located within a One-Hundred Foot Buffer Zone on Solitude Creek, a small estuary in this Maryland Eastern Shore town.
