Zaffhaus is not just an architectural triumph but also Erik Zaffuto’s family home, reflecting his passion, creativity, and meticulous attention to detail. It stands out as a true jewel in the heart of the Aosta Valley Alps.
The main influence in the design is the essence of simplicity, its composition, and purity of form. While the home has a definite geometric elegance, there is a hidden playfulness found within.
The goal for this single family residence was to create a simple, compact live-work home in the mountains that fully embraces living in nature while also addressing the social and environmental challenges of living in the mountains.
Located in Darby, Montana, the design of this 2,400-square-foot residence is a personal reflection of the homeowners’ sense of style, life experiences, and love of the land.
Viewfinder House is built as two elevated rectangular boxes with deeply recessed apertures focused on a singular view. Sheathed in a red cedar rain screen and closed on three sides, the boxes open to the Pacific Crest to the southwest.
The Axboe house sits on the north side of the Synderville Basin, Utah, overlooking the greater Park City area and the ski areas beyond. The challenge was to design a home sited naturally, accommodating a family of four, and to create a sense of connection to the mountain environment.
