The design for this Hamilton courtyard house utilises the existing footprint of a pair of timber cottages linked by a shared driveway. This arrangement had resulted in vehicles dominating the north facing backyards and the cottages having long disowned facades.
The form and programme that emerged from this project resulted from challenging site constraints, spatial limitations and a tight budget. Located in a flood prone area, it was necessary to elevate habitable rooms 1.2m above ground level. As a secondary dwelling, the brief needed to be achieved within 60sqm and adhere to a budget that would allow it to remain an affordable housing option.

Vikki’s Place by Curious Practice is a new Japanese-Inspired beach shack on a small inner city lot. The site is heavily effected by flood with Planning Controls setting the first floor 1.6m above natural ground.
The involvement of an architect in these critical finishes to the Junction Residence made a huge contribution to the success of the completed building.
