This house extension and refurbishment transforms a Victorian terraced property in a Highbury conservation area. The brief was to create open plan spaces with an improved relationship to the garden, and a kitchen that could be enjoyed as a social space.

The dwelling under refurbishment is situated in the very centre of Madrid, next to one of the most important cultural sites in the city, namely, the surroundings of the Retiro Park. It is a top-storey flat with a terrace of 190 m2 of usable space.
The owners wanted to create a new environment; they liked the idea of having a contemporary house and agreed that the house lent itself to this, however they were concerned that contemporary design could be cold and impersonal.
The project consist of the refurbishment of an apartment located in an old building at the Barcelona Gracia district. The former 90 m2 apartment, was strongly partitioned with up to 6 rooms and showed a dark appearance with almost no connection with the outdoor space.
Warrandyte Riverside House was originally designed in the 1960’s by Architect Davis S Gordon for his family, with what we suspect, was a nod to McGlashan and Everist’s award winning Heide II of the era.
