The recently completed Devil’s Corner Cellar Door and Lookout, designed by Cumulus Studio, is beautifully situated on the Freycinet Peninsula, Tasmania. It offers stunning views of the Hazards overlooking Great Oyster Bay.

Scenic Location and Iconic Views

Travelers along the Tasman Highway on Tasmania’s scenic East Coast will recognize the Cherry Tree Hill lookout. Shortly after Cranbrook, a corridor of eucalypts and scrub reveals the iconic granite mountains of the Freycinet Peninsula jutting above Moulting Lagoon. This irresistible view entices visitors to stop for a photo opportunity.

Devil’s Corner Vineyard

In the foreground of this panorama are the lush green blocks of one of Tasmania’s largest vineyards, Devil’s Corner, and its cellar door. Reopened in November 2015, this project for Brown Brothers aims to enhance the iconic view and create a new tourism experience on Tasmania’s East Coast. Additionally, a series of complementary food experiences form a local market and provide a backdrop for seasonal events.

Design and Architecture

The Cellar Door and Lookout consist of timber-clad buildings. These structures, with similar aesthetics and materials, form a modern interpretation of traditional rural settlements. The Cellar Door and food market surround a courtyard space. This arrangement offers shelter and views through the tasting area to the Hazards and access to open decks.

Curated Views and Lookout Experience

Carefully placed timber-clad shipping containers invite visitors to explore the landscape through curated framed views. The lookout is crucial as it visually signifies the settlement and interprets the landscape where Devil’s Corner wines originate. This concept parallels the appreciation of wine through understanding its subtleties.

Unique Viewing Spaces

The lookout features three distinct spaces, each offering unique views. The SKY, the HORIZON, and the TOWER, wind upwards to provide views from each compass point, culminating in an elevated view of the bay.

Conclusion

Cumulus Studio’s Devil’s Corner Cellar Door and Lookout create a dynamic scenic destination. By offering a new upgraded cellar door for the Devil’s Corner wine label and associated facilities, it draws visitors to this captivating location, making it a must-visit spot on Tasmania’s East Coast.
