With a career spanning 20 years, Derek Swalwell is one of Australia’s best-known and most respected architectural photographers. Known for capturing some of the world’s most spectacular architecturally designed buildings, Swalwell is fascinated by architecture and the built environment, both in Australia and abroad.
It follows, then, that he would collaborate with a celebrated Australian architecture firm (and long-standing clients) to renovate and update his own home in Melbourne.

To the ocean side, the Bellarine Peninsula House presents as two stacked, elongated volumes, one sheathed in a fine skin of concrete, the other in hardwood timber that will weather to a pale silver.
Reclined within a well-heeled residential enclave, KAP-House reposes behind wild grassland that grows from the remains of the old Malayan Railway. Placed on a plot that was once the sprawling garden of a classic colonial black and white bungalow, the home was imagined as a paradigm of modern tropical living.

An existing heritage building is transformed through the introduction of a modern, two-storey addition that playfully re-interprets the distinctive geometry of the original dwelling through a contemporary lens.
Within a 1.5km radius, the Stark House is surrounded by other housing estates – both low and high rise, the Changi Prison Complex, Changi Airport, and several industrial and commercial areas.
As a modern renaissance home, the St Vincents Place Residence is a new archetype developed through a reinterpretation of classical references with a modern sensibility.
