About Joe Fletcher
Born and raised in London, UK, Joe Fletcher studied painting at Chelsea College of Art & Design, receiving his BA in Fine Art, and later attended London’s Goldsmiths University, graduating with a MFA in photography. In 2003, he left soggy London for foggy San Francisco. His photos have since been featured in magazines such as Wallpaper, Architectural Digest and San Francisco, displaying his aesthetic and his appreciation for the art of architecture and the beauty of light. Fletcher is also the photographer of two books Ranch Houses, Living the California Dream (Rizzoli) and Cliff May and the Modern Ranch House (Rizzoli). He now lives with his wife and two mischievous dachshund mutts in Oakland, CA

A loft-style flipped-plan rhythmically-organized house designed by the architects for their own family, this budget-sensitive human-scaled project wove together the architects’ deep knowledge of San Francisco’s urban context and codes with their crisp and clear material and architectural aesthetic.
This custom designed private residence is situated within the Santa Lucia Preserve of Carmel Valley, California. The Architect’s overriding intention for this modern two story family home centered on achieving an intimate connection between the ‘L’ shaped residence and its setting within a rolling hillside clearing.
New York based studio General Assembly developed a total renovation project for an apartment in the Vinegar Hill neighbourhood. After trying and failing to find an apartment with character, the owners of this space opted to combine two fairly lifeless new development apartments and renovate to perfectly suit their style.
For this four-story family residence, the architects experimented with vertical circulation and crisp white materiality to create a spacious, vibrant, and geometrically engaging house. Organized around a singular central spine, the project is an exploration of fluid continuity and volumetric adventure.
On a down-sloping wooded site in Martis Valley, California, the Martis Camp house carves a serpentine form in the topography that simultaneously provides privacy toward the street while opening towards expansive meadow and Pacific Crest mountain views beyond.
This loft in a former jute mill was in a state of disrepair when we got our hands on it. Our approach was to combine many of the original elements with modern touches to create a space with a clean, contemporary, yet raw feeling.
