New York based studio General Assembly developed a total renovation project for an apartment in the Vinegar Hill neighbourhood. After trying and failing to find an apartment with character, the owners of this space opted to combine two fairly lifeless new development apartments and renovate to perfectly suit their style.
Bringing in as many natural materials as possible was important to these penthouse owners, so General Assembly incorporated concrete wall and ceiling details, reclaimed wood floors, marble slabs in the shower and kitchen, and plenty of custom Walnut millwork. We designed steel and glass doors to divide public and private areas, and full height flush millwork doors to stretch the space upward.
What this apartment demonstrates best, is that the combination of modern clean detailing with natural materials can result in both a comfortable and crisp environment. Clearly, one does not need to live in a cold white box to enjoy a modern space.
