The Randwick Home by McMillan Design reimagines a Californian Bungalow to suit the lifestyle of a young family of four. The renovation introduces a second floor and a rear extension, creating stronger indoor-outdoor connections while blending traditional character with modern sophistication.
Blending Old and New
McMillan Design carefully combined original architecture with contemporary additions to achieve balance. At the front, the team refreshed the bungalow with a light and timeless palette that highlights its historic charm. At the back, they introduced darker V-groove cladding to mark the new extension. Natural timber details connect the two styles, ensuring cohesion throughout the home.
A Family-Centered Design
The renovation prioritizes the needs of a busy young family. The new layout improves functionality and comfort, encouraging easy movement between spaces. Living areas now open directly onto the exterior, creating seamless transitions that support both daily living and entertaining.
Bathrooms with Personality
McMillan Design gave each of the three bathrooms a unique character while maintaining unity. The team selected subway tiles for their classic appeal and updated them with different colors, handmade-style finishes, and textures. They paired these with modern lighting fixtures, which add warmth, personality, and enduring elegance to every bathroom.
A Calm and Neutral Palette
Inside, the designers established a fresh neutral base and layered it with blue-grey tones and timber accents. These choices add texture, warmth, and interest, while also creating a calm atmosphere for family life. Timber detailing reinforces a natural character that runs throughout the home.
A Perfect Balance for Modern Living
The project honors the Californian Bungalow’s heritage while embracing modern design solutions. McMillan Design transformed the Randwick Home into a refined yet relaxed family residence — one that suits contemporary life while remaining welcoming for friends and family for years to come.
