Casa Negra is a striking example of urban infill architecture, nestled on a wooded lot in West Asheville. Initially, we embarked on this project as an accessory dwelling to our home, and today it houses our design studio on the main and top levels with a rental on the bottom level.
The first of two Merge housing projects referred to by their location on Condor Street, this project might be more aptly described as an albatross: a problem of development pressures and site demands solved through subtle formal and material strategies.
The project is situated on land grant farm that has been a family home since the early 1960’s. 68 of the 78 acres is tillable and used for row crops.
Everden is a single family residence, new build construction. The brief was to create a place for a growing family, that could support their desires for the home to be a place of refuge.
The goal for this single family residence was to create a simple, compact live-work home in the mountains that fully embraces living in nature while also addressing the social and environmental challenges of living in the mountains.
Architect Kyu Sung Woo designed House II for his wife, a concert pianist, and himself: a couple in their late seventies who are still active, but starting to think about their changing needs.
Modern additions bookend the front and back of this existing two storey house providing a striking contrast with the original 1960’s design. The front addition puts a modern face on an existing integrated garage and encloses a concrete porch to add more interior floor space on the main floor.
This new build was designed for an English couple looking to create a ‘weekend barn’ for use with friends and family, as well as a high-end holiday rental.
