The clients approached Madeleine Blanchfield Architects to design a new home in a heritage conservation area in Sydney’s East. The remainder of the Queens Park house is contemporary, light filled in contrast to the original.
This is an addition to an old weatherboard house set within a large garden. The idea was to create a separate sleeping pavillion linked to the existing cottage via extending the old verandah. This creates a separation of sleeping and living areas and links all spaces with the verdant garden.
Iron Maiden House was designed for a family of five who wanted a home which celebrated the Sydney climate after returning from many years living in Hong Kong.
Located within Woollahra Council’s Heritage Conservation Area, this residence is perched upon a 5m heritage sandstone wall that forms part of a large bushland setting. The Woollahra house has been designed as a structure that belongs to the park with its strong concrete block corner buttresses rising up from the existing sandstone base.
Tama’s Tee Home was constructed on what was solid and reusable from the previous house. Approximately fifty-percent of the previous structure was kept, including the large sandstone retaining wall to the front of the home and the garage beneath.
This project involved a narrow three story side addition to a 1920s two storey brick house in leafy Bellevue Hill. The brief called for an addition that created space for a study, library and rumpus area that also provided an opportunity
Dating back to the 19th century the Surry Hills Warehouse was originally a tractor showroom, later the Labor Club of South Sydney, and eventually even a night club. The re-use of the warehouse into a single residence provided many creative opportunities.
