Springing from the hillside, Riversbend is oriented around a lazy turn in the East Gallatin River. The sleek forms are embedded in the undulating site, prominent yet respectful of the natural hill crest, creating dynamic views as one moves through the landscape.
The goal of the design for the main house was to complete the Fish Creek compound where multiple generations of the architect’s extended family could gather and experience the wonders of the site, while also serving as an intimate home for two.
“Loft living” sometimes forces a compromise between bohemian charm and individual privacy. The informal plan, ample natural light, and uninterrupted views of an open loft are typically at odds with the modern family’s desire for private space and distinct bedrooms.
Nestled into a Mercer Island hillside, this intimate two-story residence emphasizes craft, materiality and the connection to the outdoors. A clear demarcation of public and private spaces is reflected both in the design and choice of materials
Programmatically, the Northern Lake Home is composed of two primary massings separated by a glass core. Splaying out to the lake beyond and nestled into a natural swale, the public spaces contour along the landscape blurring the distinction between its built and natural environments.
Designed by New York-based design studio New Affiliates, Tunbridge Winter Cabin is a 115 sqm cabin that contains a painting studio and living quarters on 26 hectares in the Green Mountains of Vermont.
The Oakland Hills house was built originally in 1939, the house renovation aimed to update the property by creating a modern, spacious interior, without expanding its original footprint. The two-level house is perched on a hillside lot, overlooking Oakland and the San Francisco East Bay.
Features of the riparian site were thick cottonwood and conifer tree cover and a man-made pond and irrigation channel flowing from the Snake River from which the property takes its name, Owl Ditch Ranch.
Grounded by its singular direction and enhanced by innovative details, the Shadow Box may eventually cast its “shadow” onto our future work, extending the knowledge we’ve gained and the lessons learned.
