The Friendly’s Pub, designed by Kvadrat Architects, is a standout location in Astana, Kazakhstan. Astana, as a young capital, has few places rich with history, and The Friendly’s Pub is one of those rare gems. This music pub combines the ambiance of an English traditional establishment with industrial style and the vibrant energy of an American bar.

Historical Charm

Years ago, one of the city’s oldest legendary pubs opened in this location. Despite changes in ownership and concepts, the interior has remained largely unchanged. The wood and leather have absorbed the smells and aged beautifully, revealing the natural textures’ charm. The current owner has preserved the English pub ambiance while incorporating elements of a traditional American bar and industrial style.

Vibrant Nightlife

The pub comes to life every night with a variety of live music, ranging from rock to jazz, stand-up festivals, and DJ performances. The atmosphere is always lively, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.

Unique Features and Surprises

The Friendly’s Pub is full of entertaining surprises. At the far end of the hallway, a secret door with a barn lock can open at any moment, with the bartender handing out a free pour. Regulars refer to this spot as “Harry Potter’s room” due to its mysterious location under the stairs and the unpredictability of the door opening.

In the ladies’ room, a statue of Apollo with a fig leaf adds a playful touch. Unlike traditional sculptures, this one has a movable leaf. When lifted, a lamp in the bar lights up, and patrons greet the inquisitive person with applause.

The men’s room also has its quirks, including a height-measuring mirror hanging at two meters and a urinal with a sensor that triggers music. These playful details add to the pub’s unique charm.

Décor and Design

The light, furniture, and décor are custom-made by local manufacturers according to the designs by Kvadrat Architects. One of the standout features is the gallery wall in the dressing room, showcasing rock legends from the “Club 27,” musicians who left an indelible mark on the world before passing away too soon.

Conclusion

The Friendly’s Pub is more than just a pub; it’s a historical landmark in Astana with a rich history and vibrant present. Designed by Kvadrat Architects, it combines traditional English pub charm with American bar energy and industrial style, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere. Whether enjoying live music, discovering hidden surprises, or admiring the custom décor, visitors to The Friendly’s Pub are sure to have a memorable experience.
