This 45-ft-wide property on Vancouver’s Point Grey Rd already had a 17-ft-wide house on it when the client approached the architects. His request: renovate the complex, existing structure while adding a new extension with simple, open volumes.
Bernaung House, Indonesia / RAD+ar
The design of the Bernanung House was to rearrange all the user’s activity during the day and cycle it into as a loop within a giant roof hovering above it. Atrium as the center of the houses acted both as a visual direction and wind chimney to ensure a cross and stacked effect for natural ventilation.

The form was inspired by the sloping site and how we could create a bold point of difference on a site that sat far beneath the street level. We aimed to perch the building within the landscape, like a rock juxtaposed in nature and creating a monolithic street presence.
