Nestled within two-thirds of an acre and overlooking a Grade II listed park, Chilham House is a testament to timeless design. Originally built in 1910, this Edwardian villa combines Tudor and Victorian architectural influences, which have been thoughtfully extended into a new two-storey addition. The result is a harmonious fusion of historic charm and modern functionality, offering a serene retreat in a picturesque setting.

A Design Rooted in Heritage

The new extension respects the home’s historic character while embracing simplicity. Using a minimal material palette, the design mirrors the original building’s decorative details, such as its black-painted string course, which references the Tudor style of neighboring properties.

The addition’s red-brick chimney complements the original structure, creating a visual continuity that ties the old and new together. These deliberate choices ensure that the extension enhances the home’s heritage rather than overshadowing it.

Indoor-Outdoor Harmony

The south-facing extension, with its expansive glazed walls, creates a seamless connection between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. Natural light floods the open-plan kitchen and living area, while uninterrupted views of the garden bring a sense of tranquility to the home.

A pergola provides shading for the glass walls, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. Over time, climbing vegetation will grow along the pergola, adding greenery and seasonal variation that softens the structure and integrates it further with its natural surroundings.

Thoughtful Interior Spaces

On the ground floor, the extension offers a spacious and light-filled kitchen alongside an open-plan living area that encourages connection and flexibility. Upstairs, the master bedroom exudes calm with its clean, functional layout and a generous window seat that frames picturesque views of the south-facing garden. This space invites relaxation, offering a perfect spot to enjoy the serenity of the surrounding landscape.

A Modern Home with a Historic Soul

Chilham House by ID Architecture exemplifies how contemporary design can complement and enhance historic architecture. By carefully integrating the extension with the original structure, the design respects the home’s Edwardian roots while providing a modern space tailored to today’s living.

This project is a thoughtful response to the challenges of blending old and new, offering a home that feels timeless yet perfectly suited for modern life.
