Interest in bunkers and their construction is booming in the global real estate sector. This widespread need to prepare for an imminent global collapse has prompted the creative studio WANNA to ask: What response could interior design provide in emergency living spaces? The answer is “Cozy Bunker,” a reinterpretation of an underground shelter, which alongside the company Formica, is showcased at the 59th edition of Casa Decor.
A Fusion of Survival and Comfort
Inspired by brutalist architecture, Cozy Bunker reimagines a subterranean refuge not only as a hideout in extreme situations but also as a place to disconnect and find solace. The project encourages us to rethink bunker design by combining two seemingly incompatible concepts: well-being and survival. This conceptual duality creates a dialogue between opposites. On one side, the solid construction of the access corridor, with its stony appearance, conveys security and inaccessibility. On the other, the minimalist and warm chromatic interior of the shelter evokes relaxation and hope, providing a pleasant experience to help residents detach from external chaos.
Innovative Use of Materials
The entire project is built using high-pressure laminates from Formica, metallic laminates from Homapal, and innovative surfaces from FENIX. These materials showcase great versatility in terms of design, geometries, and volumes, as well as a rich palette of colors and finishes. WANNA’s design approach includes principles such as playing with heights, leveraging the four and a half meters of vertical space, ensuring structural solidity, utilizing indirect lighting, and creating dynamic volumetrics.
Design Philosophy
WANNA’s design philosophy for Cozy Bunker involves a thoughtful interplay of space and materials. By maximizing vertical space, the design maintains a sense of openness despite being underground. Structural solidity ensures that the bunker can withstand external pressures, while indirect lighting creates a calming ambiance. The use of high-quality, versatile materials further enhances the aesthetic and functional aspects of the space.
In conclusion, Cozy Bunker by WANNA and Formica at Casa Decor 59th edition presents an innovative approach to emergency living spaces. It marries the ruggedness required for survival with the comfort and aesthetic appeal necessary for well-being, setting a new standard for bunker design in today’s real estate market.
