BAND Architektur took on the renovation of a historic 1890 farmhouse in Fürstenfeldbruck, Germany, with a careful approach to preserving the character of the building while enhancing its functionality for a modern family of four. The renovation aimed to balance the farmhouse’s historical significance with the comforts and aesthetics of contemporary living, ensuring that the space continues to tell its story through a thoughtful combination of old and new elements.
Preserving the Historical Elements
In keeping with the farmhouse’s heritage, many of the original structures on the ground and first floors were left unchanged. The architects prioritized the restoration and conservation of the existing features such as wooden beams, joinery, and doors, which were either restored to their former glory or replaced with materials that retained the traditional patina. This meticulous restoration highlights the dedication to preserving the original charm and craftsmanship of the house.
The design respects the historical context by maintaining much of the farmhouse’s rustic appeal, especially in the use of oak wood flooring, which was custom-made to replicate the original parquet pattern. These details serve to preserve the farmhouse’s timeless character while ensuring that the renovation remains faithful to the 19th-century aesthetic.
Modern Interventions and Spatial Reorganization
While maintaining the historical charm, the renovation also introduced several modern interventions to enhance the functionality of the space. The reorganization of the floor plan was a central aspect of the project, aimed at creating a more open and spacious interior. The layout now offers an improved flow between rooms, with large, open areas that encourage interaction among family members.
New structural components made from black steel were introduced only where necessary, ensuring that any modern additions complemented the existing wooden structures. This thoughtful integration of steel and wood contrasts the industrial with the organic, creating a dialogue between the old and the new. Furthermore, modern sanitary and electrical installations were added to bring the house up to contemporary living standards.
A Cohesive Blend of Old and New
The overall aesthetic of the renovated farmhouse is defined by the harmonious balance between natural materials, subtle color schemes, and attention to detail. The use of natural wood, paired with modern materials, creates a unity between the old and new elements. This combination enhances the visual appeal and ensures that the historical and modern aspects of the house reinforce each other, resulting in a space that feels both timeless and contemporary.
In conclusion, BAND Architektur’s renovation of the 1890 farmhouse successfully preserves its historical significance while introducing modern features that make the home both functional and beautiful. The project serves as an excellent example of how old structures can be revitalized and adapted for modern living, all while respecting their historical roots.
