Designed by Tantalus Studio in collaboration with Aina Ola, Kohanaiki Residence on Hawaii’s Big Island is a celebration of coastal serenity, craftsmanship, and family connection. Conceived as a spacious oceanfront sanctuary, the six-bedroom, eight-bathroom home reflects its owners’ deep love for the sea while embracing the tranquil rhythm of the island’s landscape.

A Vision of Family and Ocean

The clients envisioned Kohanaiki Residence as a gathering retreat—an expansive yet intimate home that would welcome extended family and friends. Set within the exclusive community of Kohanaiki, the residence overlooks both the shimmering Pacific Ocean and an ancient Hawaiian fish pond. From the earliest design stages, the project sought to honor these natural surroundings, framing water views and integrating the home seamlessly into its coastal environment.

Every design decision balances openness with comfort. Large sliding doors and windows draw in soft daylight and ocean breezes, while thoughtful spatial zoning allows private and communal spaces to coexist in harmony. The result is a home that encourages connection—between family, nature, and the enduring spirit of place.

Material Warmth and Textural Harmony

The interior palette of Kohanaiki Residence merges natural materials with sophisticated detailing. Wire-brushed teak millwork and cedar ceilings introduce warmth and texture, while earthy coral-hued walls add a subtle depth that recalls volcanic stone. Woven grasscloth wallcoverings complement these organic tones, creating an atmosphere that feels grounded, tactile, and effortlessly Hawaiian.

This subdued backdrop allows for rich layering. Throughout the home, vibrant textiles, handcrafted objects, and curated artworks infuse personality and color. Each piece was chosen collaboratively between principal designer Ginger Lunt Walters and the clients to ensure a balance between refinement and authenticity.

Personalized Spaces with Character

Every room in Kohanaiki Residence tells a story. In the kitchen, a locally sourced blue quartzite slab serves as both centerpiece and conversation starter. The living room features a bold monstera-print couch that anchors the space with playful energy. In the master bedroom, a custom textile headboard creates a graphic focal point while maintaining a sense of calm.

These elements embody the home’s philosophy—visionary design expressed through personal details. Rather than imposing a single aesthetic, the interiors evolve from the family’s memories, values, and collected experiences.

A Collaborative Creation

The project exemplifies teamwork at its finest. Tantalus Studio worked closely with local architect and builder Aina Ola, blending architectural precision with interior artistry. This collaboration produced a home that is both functional and poetic—a true reflection of the island lifestyle.

An Island Sanctuary

Ultimately, Kohanaiki Residence stands as a testament to the balance between sophistication and simplicity. The architecture celebrates the island’s natural quietude, while the interiors express warmth, creativity, and a welcoming spirit. Every surface and space invites relaxation, gathering, and reflection—qualities that define Hawaiian living at its most genuine.
