Jvantspijker Architects have designed a sturdy cube-shaped house in the centre of Rotterdam. With its spatial 3-dimensional layout the building allows a modern family to meet the paradoxical demands of urban life. The house provides community as well as privacy to its inhabitants and it is both connected to and sheltered from the street and the surrounding city.
Situated in the far corner of a mews, our brief for this project was to create a contemporary family home. To respect the existing architecture of the mews, we designed a home that has a more traditional feel on the outside, with bricks and sash windows, but which has a distinctively modern feel inside.
The Gansett Lane residence is located on a restrictive corner lot in Amagansett set among beautiful mature plantings near Atlantic beach. This renovation and addition has been constructed using green technology and passive solar design.
Set on a large semi-rural property, this single storey L-shaped modern house wraps a courtyard terrace and pool. The main wing includes a study facing the front garden, as well as an open plan living area and master bed adjacent to the terrace.
This two-bedroom residence, located in Owczarnia, a village near Warsaw, to a large degree owes its form to its owners, who, wanting a personalized, unique look, agreed to a spatial composition that departed from that of the archetypal home.
This gently sloped 1.75 acre lot in Atherton provided a rare opportunity to create a contemporary courtyard house that also has commanding views of the surrounding hills. The pleasantly varied massing and simple wood siding gives this house the look and feel of a structure that has evolved over time, while remaining contemporary and fresh.
A 1950s ranch house failed to make the most of its 17-acre site overlooking two converging creeks. The owners wanted to enlarge the house and take advantage of the sweeping vistas and light reflected off the water.
A dual strategy is applied to this complete reform project: Firstly, the floor plan arrangement is based on an L-shaped service band that integrates the access, wet areas, storage areas and leisure spaces.
