These four Alphington townhouses present an innovative approach to the design of medium density housing. Each townhouse has been designed with excellent connections to the outdoors, maximised access to north light, and natural ventilation. Carried out in a residential area of the Rosemont–La-Petite-Patrie borough, the Dandurand Multi-Dwellings project consisted in renovating and expanding a duplex built in the 1920s that housed three dwelling units. The added storey harmonized the building with the size of the surrounding constructions.
Built on a steep slope lot in Seattle with sweeping views of Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains, the project presented a number of challenges, both technical and permit-related. As a designated Environmentally Critical Area (ECA) Steep Slope, the lot is subject to a far more rigorous standard of review than an ordinary flat lot.
