Sorrel House is a project that explores the juxtaposition between historical context and contemporary architecture within a broader subtropical paradigm. Beyond the initial stark contrast that presents between the new and old, a more subtle debate about edges, openings and thresholds is being had.
A private, landscaped, north-east courtyard forms the catalyst of the ‘V House’, which sits proudly on the edge of Sunshine Coast’s Mooloolah River. The ‘V’ refers to the floor plan which hugs the boundaries of the property allowing for a transparent living pavilion that physically and visually connects the courtyard to the water beyond.
Set behind an existing weatherboard cottage, a series of interlocking masonry volumes are placed to gain the maximum amount of light and air. A new lightwell was created immediately behind the cottage, followed by three new brick volumes which slide down the southern side of the site.
Idyllically set among Victoria’s coastal bushland on the Mornington Peninsula, this was a replacement building for a fiberglass shack that has grown into a permanent residence and a coastal holiday home for extended family.
The Curvy House by Ben Callery Architects is a clever response to a range of architectural challenges presented by the existing conditions of the site. The project involved renovating a narrow 6.5-meter-wide block with neighboring walls built on both sides and a heritage façade that needed to be preserved.
Located in Hawthorn, this early Victorian House, known as ‘ Grasmere house ’, has been transformed into a bright and welcoming family home, whilst also retaining, and celebrating its original Victorian character.
Named after its sunny corner block, True North house is a home for an architect and family. The site contains two dwellings. At the rear, stables built in the 1880s was renovated to a one bedroom townhouse
The Templestowe House is a nod to the tradition of the Italian Palazzo and Australian courtyard house, creating the constant connection between outdoor and indoor spaces.
The house sits firmly along a winding ridgeline on the outskirts of the small township of Fish Creek. The home surrounds itself in a highly textured brickwork wall in response to its exposed position to strong local winds and a nearby country road.
