The decision to encapsulate the remains of the 17th century cottage with almost everything left intact, including the dry ivy branches and the trimmings, in a modern house is both bold and brave and is successfully carried out by the project team.
Designed by Ibsen Nelsen in 1961, the layout of this mid-century home was very well considered but the character and flow between spaces wasn’t a good fit for the daily patterns of the new owners.
Original architect William Krisel designed the block home in 1963 for a builder friend, creating a U-shaped plan that wraps around a backyard lawn and pool, allowing all rooms to have access to the outdoors and views of the landscape.
The materialization is answering the desire to recover and/or emphasize the original condition of the traditional style house. A piece of natural terracotta is placed on a running board as the pavement and the walls are stripped to expose the original factory work with all its defects and textures.

The client, whose grown-up children left the family home, aimed for functionality and further integration between spaces now inhabited only by a couple. The volume of the house occupied almost the entire surface of the narrow and deep plot.
The Alves da Veiga project aimed to reconvert an old typography built in the nineteenth century and abandoned for decades in a set of six apartments, maintaining all the structure and spatial concept of preexistence. The original building, though appearing from the outside only two storeys in fact contained a curious floor + mezzanine organization that actually embodied four habitable floors.
