Set on a two-acre wooded bluff along Lake Michigan, Meadow Lane Retreat is a weekend getaway designed to foster tranquility, connection, and immersion in nature. Moreover, the empty-nester clients sought “an escape from the city for the family to gather—a place for sunlight, a place to breathe.”
The clients had searched five years across four states to find a site for their weekend home that spoke to them. The Lawless retreat was to be everything that their Chicago residence – a lofted space nestled within the attic trusses of a converted church – was not.
Perched on a woodland bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, this home is an assemblage of three offset structures that play off each other— the ‘gathering’ structure contains the living room, kitchen and a covered ‘vista’ seating terrace; the two ‘sleeping’ structures house the master bedroom suite and three children’s bedrooms. A dining area breezeway connects all three structures.
