The residents of this grand house in the Withrow Park area of Toronto were looking to replace their existing rear addition that was in a poor state of repair.

Sitting prominently on a raised corner block on Fremantle’s oceanside Marine Terrace, this project is a simple yet sculptural rear addition to our clients’ heritage brick cottage.
The Washington, DC-based firm, Jonathan Kuhn Architect, was hired to expand the living space of the two-story property. Wood siding was used to lend warmth and wrap a third floor addition that cascades over the existing brick, effectively stitching the old with the new.
This renovation and rear addition to the architect’s own 1950 mid-century modern house, designed by Charles Goodman, included 2 phases. The existing Goodman structure was renovated 5 years ago, with new kitchen, bathroom, finishes, windows, mechanical, and electrical.
Little remained of the original grandeur but its elegant proportions of the Edwardian style. It was decided to divide the house in two, with the private areas confined to the original upper levels and the public areas to the new rear addition. It was important that two areas were clearly separated and could be seen on entry through the house.
