Tsubo Niwa House is a Victorian large single family dwelling situated in Hackney. The client were the founders of Studio XAG. From the very beginning, the project was about refurbishing and extending the house whilst injecting the Clients creative personalities as designers and makers themselves.
An architect and her partner, parents of twins, called upon APPAREIL Architecture to design the expansion and refurbishing of a veterans’ home in Verdun. The client, Catherine Gauthier, being an architect herself, the project was conceptualized through collaboration and communication among all parties.
The rooms making up this Old Jaffa house came together over hundreds of years – each with its own character and ground level. Refurbishing presented an opportunity to unite the rooms into one whole and in particular, to illuminate and brighten the dim space by opening it up toward the sea.
