Built on the slope of Mount Shefford, the residence bridges an aerial view on one side and an ascending, rugged topography, populated by rocks and maples, on the other. The initial idea for this project was to merge with the mountain, to nestle into the terrain until it becomes one with the residence.
Idyllically set among Victoria’s coastal bushland on the Mornington Peninsula, this was a replacement building for a fiberglass shack that has grown into a permanent residence and a coastal holiday home for extended family.
Programmatically, the Northern Lake Home is composed of two primary massings separated by a glass core. Splaying out to the lake beyond and nestled into a natural swale, the public spaces contour along the landscape blurring the distinction between its built and natural environments.
This modern residence is structured by a striped pattern of wood porches and beams of sustainable solid Cumaru wood. The roof was built with processed boards and waterproof membrane in order to avoid the use of water and provide faster construction.
With the original outline, the only change was in the existing stairwells, through the usage of weathering steel e dimensioning its usage according to the visual weight in order to hierarchize the absence of mass.
The main level of the Berkshire Retreat was raised about ten feet above the ground, partly to maximize the views, but also to get up above the humidity and insects in the summertime, and the snow in the winter.

A unique project nearly four years in the making, the Manson Barn Retreat is one part working barn for a commercial fruit orchard, one part hospitality venue for weddings and events (complete with custom brick pizza oven) and one part luxury residence on the top floor.
This recreational retreat is built on an old majada, as stone sheds are known in the Sierra de Aracena, auxiliary buildings that serve as pantry, chicken coop or for storing implements. It is for this reason that they are usually located on the edge of villages, closer to the rich orchards, like those bordering Cortelazor.
