Twenty years ago, Whitten Architects designed a home for a family on a 100-acre coastal farm in the town of Yarmouth. In 2017, we returned to the site to design a cottage for the next generation of the same family.
North of Acadia National Park, Englishman Bay is known for its rocky, rugged coastline and pristine natural landscape. An undulating shoreline made up of protected coves and calm waters makes this Downeast area a favorite among sailors and kayakers.
The Lakes and Mountains region in Western Maine is made up of majestic mountain ranges, hundreds of pristine glacial lakes, and historic towns. An hour north of Portland, and home to Maine’s ski resorts, the region is a year-round destination.
Our New York-based clients with part-time residence in London focused their search in Boothbay near dear friends of theirs. They engaged Whitten Architects during their search to assess potential properties.
Our site-specific design solution locates the Bunganuc Woods House on the northernmost edge of a heavily wooded 3.5-acre parcel, affording an opportunity to clear a sunny solar corridor to the south.
An active young and growing family approached us with a desire to create a home that would give the ability to thoroughly enjoy this serene landscape. They wanted a “low-impact” Casco Bay Island retreat with the capability to welcome frequent visiting family and friends.
A property, that was once an expansive saltwater farm, now serves as a setting for this oceanfront retreat located a short drive from downtown Portland. The farm’s fields, cleared long ago for cultivation, now afford sweeping views of the rocky shore, distant islands, and a vast horizon. On it’s own it is an incredibly beautiful
