The Press Hotel, housed in the renowned Portland Press Herald building, was opened in 2015 as a 110-room hotel with a contemporary vision conceived by the New York-based design firm Stonehill & Taylor.
The designer’s presentation: As Interior Designer, Stonehill & Taylor is working on the conversion of a historic building located in Portland, ME into a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel to be a new four-star, lifestyle boutique.
Originally the Portland Press Herald building, Stonehill & Taylor takes inspiration from the site’s unique history in their design narrative. Referencing letterpress type cases, rectangular frame motifs are found throughout the design of the public areas and guestrooms, moments include a screen at the main entry and.
The reception desk pops from its surroundings featuring a custom sculptural wall commissioned by local artist, a collage of enlarged letter blocks. The corridors are lined with digital wall covering containing custom graphics, a pattern comprised of historic headlines from the Portland Press Herald. Targeting LEED Silver Certification, the conversion plans are historically sensitive, energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable.
